A newly discovered spider was named after Monster Hunter’s most disturbing monster
Spiders may cause panic for millions of people, but a scientist saw the discovery of a new one as a chance to reference one of his favorite games.
Although it may seem surreal, the story behind this discovery is real. A scientist from Guangxi, China, has discovered a new species of spider that has no eyes and has decided to baptize it with the same name as one of the best-known monsters in Monster Hunter: The Khezu. So this new spider being is now called Octacilia Khezu (Otacilia is a genus of spiders in the group Phrurolithidae).
The Khezu is a monster that debuted in the Capcom series since its first generation (PS2, 2004) and is considered one of the most horrifying creatures in the franchise. This is because while it looks like a long-necked wyvern, it’s actually a parasite that ate up another winged-monster from the inside, growing to fit itself into its corpse and becoming a pseudo-wyvern itself. It is known to lurk in caverns, hunting other creatures with its newfound size and power, and its skin becomes rubbery and pale, making a mockery of the other dragons.
It’s not that both creatures are too similar in behavior, but it is understood that the inspiration comes from the mere fact of not having eyes and, of course, this scientist’s love for the video game in question.
Monster Hunter Wilds, one of the great video games of 2025
After the resounding success achieved by both Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise and their respective expansions, Iceborne and Sunbreak, Capcom wants to repeat it next year with Monster Hunter Wilds, which promises to be the most ambitious game in the history of the saga. A commitment to open maps like never before seen in the franchise, in which each battle exudes epic action and in which the hunters will explore a living and changing ecosystem at all times. It will arrive sometime in 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
