A Pokémon collector finds 29 Ancient Mew cards he’d forgotten about since childhood: they’re now worth a fortune
A Reddit user stumbled upon an extraordinary find while cleaning his childhood bedroom: 29 Ancient Mew cards from the Pokémon TCG.

Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, many movie theaters around the world handed out promotional Pokémon TCG cards as if they were mere advertising flyers. Although many are still unaware of it, what was then a small free souvenir from an afternoon watching the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo, can now be worth several thousand dollars; that is exactly what happened to a Reddit user, who found at home no fewer than 29 Ancient Mew cards, perfectly preserved since his childhood. It is a great nostalgic treasure that is now worth a small fortune.
Ancient Mew: The Rare Pokémon TCG Card That Went From a Movie Ticket Giveaway to a Collector’s Item
In early May 2026, Reddit user j2886 posted an image on the Pokémon Trading Card Game subreddit that sparked both envy and praise. This collector found a whopping 29 Ancient Mew cards stored at home in fairly good condition. At the time, these promotional cards were given away with every ticket to ‘Pokémon: The First Movie,’ the franchise’s first feature film, which originally premiered in Japan in 1998 and internationally in the following years.
“I finally made it home to finish cleaning out my childhood bedroom and found 29 Ancient Mew cards I totally forgot I had. When I was like 11/12 I remember always asking the movie theater workers if they had any extra and one day this guy game me a stack of them,” revealed the lucky owner of such a unique collection, showing off his collection of cards spread out like a fan in his hand.
Reactions to the post were immediate, and among them were humorous comments like “Are you the guy whos dad worked at the movie theater company” or “This guy’s going to crash the market.” The truth is that despite the card’s unique design—which, let’s not forget, was only promotional and not playable within the Pokémon TCG—it isn’t as expensive as one might expect. The reason is that despite its limited distribution, it is by no means “extremely rare.” Obviously, copies that are still sealed or in good condition are more highly valued, with an average selling price of $113 in near-mint condition according to TCG Player at the time of this publication.

The main strength of j2886 lies precisely in the fact that it doesn’t have just one card, but twenty-nine in total. Therefore, assuming they’re all in near-perfect condition, he could pocket nearly $3,300 if he decided to sell them without offering a bulk discount or selling them individually. Even so, and despite the potential financial gain, many other Reddit users advise you not to part with them and instead to keep them for both aesthetic and nostalgic reasons.

For now, the ball is in the court of the owner of 29 Ancient Mews; he has not yet revealed what his next move will be with this treasure from his childhood. The only thing clear from this story is that what was offered for free a quarter-century ago as a small gift for watching a movie—without giving it a second thought—can, more than twenty-five years later, help its owner out of a minor financial bind. The moral of the story is that nostalgia always sells, and we often find all kinds of treasures in the most unexpected places around the house.
