A Robin Spin-Off? Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy actor reveals director's plans

Gordon-Levitt admits that those were different times and it was too much to do a trilogy more than a decade ago.

Christopher Nolan’s fantastic Batman trilogy came to an end in 2012 with the release of The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final film in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt starred as Bruce Wayne’s sidekick and Commissioner James Gordon. His character’s name, revealed at the end of the film, was Robin John Blake, leading fans to believe that Nolan might have plans for him to star in a spin-off beyond the finale. Now, more than a decade later, Gordon-Levitt has revealed what the fantastic director had in mind.

Of course, it was noticeable at the time that Gordon-Levitt’s character did not take the name of any of those who have been Robin throughout the long history of Batman: Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Dick Grayson... But this was not an obstacle to think that he could have adventures after the heroic end of Batman had come, although according to what the actor has revealed, there were never plans for it.

Did Nolan want to continue with Batman after his original trilogy?

“Nolan was making a trilogy. He never wanted to make any more movies,” Gordon-Levitt tells Inverse. “This was an ending to his trilogy. It’s funny, we look back on it now with the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel to a sequel. But back in those olden days, doing a trilogy was a lot, and that was how it was thought of.”

Nevertheless, Gordon-Levitt seems to be done with superhero movies, and in recent years he has been linked to characters like Ant-Man or Star-Lord, who would eventually be played by Paul Rudd or Chris Pratt. “Yeah, people like to talk. I understand why it’s fun to talk about these kinds of things. I don’t really have anything to add to this. I’m sorry,” he says, dismissing the matter outright.

In the meantime, we can enjoy Christopher Nolan’s brilliant trilogy of ‘Batman Begins’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on MAX.
