Luffy D. Monkey at 40 and 60 years old
At the request of many readers, Eiichiro Oda drew the Straw Hat Gang at the ages of 40 and 60. He also drew two versions of each of them. One would reflect their appearance "when things are going well" and the other when the opposite happens and life passes them by. In the specific case of Luffy, a fan asked if he would end up looking like Garp (and no doubt he would).
Roronoa Zoro at 40 and 60 years old
In Zoro's case, Oda jokes that he will end up mastering the use of five swords in battle and looking suspiciously like Silvers Rayleigh, Gol D. Roger's right-hand man. That is, if he doesn't turn into an old man lost to gambling and rheumatism.
Nami at 40 and 60 years old
And if Zoro looks like Rayleigh, Nami looks like her friend Shakuyaku, the one responsible for Shakky's Rip-off Bar on Gyojin Island. Unless, of course, greed causes the beauty to abandon her in the end.
Usopp at 40 and 60 years old
No matter how well things go, Usopp will never take the smile off his face or stop bragging and lying about his exploits. In fact, the "positive" drawing of him at 60 is so romantic it hurts, as we see the shooter remembering Kaya, his great love.
Vinsmoke Sanji at 40 and 60 years old
Sanji's paths could not be more different and funny. If things go well, he will end up like the person he loves the most, Chef Zeff, but if things go badly, he will end up like the person he hates the most, his father, Vinsmoke Judge. Will he find the All Blue or will he throw in the towel and start poisoning the oceans with his resentment?
Tony Tony Chopper at 40 and 60 years old
He followed up with the crew's doctor, who is hard to believe in this dark version that rejects the Straw Hats and demands sacrifice. Chopper can't help but be kawaii or not look like Dr. Hiriluk.
Nico Robin at 40 and 60 years old
And Oda ended with Robin, who will find the Fountain of Eternal Youth if he finds the One Piece, or otherwise turn into some kind of Ohara Kureha.
Portgas D. Ace at 40 and 60 years old
The author also drew Luffy's brothers. Ace would be a cross between his father, Gol D. Roger, and Shanks, either that or a loose cannon who used to ask his brother for money to train and protect him.
Sabo
In the case of Sabo, and unlike Chopper, the dark version is almost more plausible than the positive one. A trickster or Emmett Brown, which do you like better?
Buggy the clown at 60 years old
Although Oda stopped drawing, his ramblings gave free rein to dozens of artists who did the same with the rest of the characters. Below are those of Rofta (@Rofta_55 on social media), the official illustrator of the One Piece card game.
Smoke at 60 years old
Any more doubts that this is Tom Cruise's version of the One Piece world?
Crocodile at 60 years old
Is it possible to reach the age of 60 smoking cigars to the rhythm of Cocodrile?
Nefertari Vivi at 40 and 60 years old
Vivi seems to go through different stages rather than getting older, and the one in her sixties is worth a vacation in Dressrosa.
Shanks at 60 years old
Would he have met Luffy then?
Dracule Mihawk at 60 years old
And will Hawk Eyes have beaten the fraud charges and fought all the fights?
Boa Hancock at 60 years old
It would be strange if aging had taken its toll on Boa's beauty and dulled her power. Had we just put a new fear into her body?
Trafalgar D. Water Law at 40 and 60 years old
Law's version in his 60s could very well be Zoro's version at the same age.
Donquixote Rosinante at 40 and 60 years old
In this type of drawing, the artists also remember those who, unfortunately, will never reach the age they play with.
Eustass 'Captain' Kid at 40 and 60 years old
Kid's smile gets scarier (and his neck thicker) as the years go by.
Killer at 40 and 60 years old
Well, with this one, it's not like they're herniating either.
Basil Hawkins at 40 and 60 years old
A Gothic faithful to his style to the grave.
Scratchmen Apoo at 40 and 60 years old
Apoo seems to be slowly turning into a Daft Punk tribute band.
X Drake at 40 and 60 years old
If Drake's look at 60 is not that of a world-weary admiral, the world has gone mad.
Capone Bege at 60 years old
Has anyone noticed that no character seems to lose hair over the years?
Perona at 40 and 60 years old
The scary thing about the Ghost Princess would be that her spirits and incantations would age as well.
Bartholomew at 40 and 60 years old
Phew. As if being the captain of a fan club at 60 wasn't enough to make you cringe, the demotion...
Koala at 40 and 60 years old
Of course, they must have found the Fountain of Youth in Japan and are hiding it from the world.
Kuzan at 60 years old
And the list ends with Kuzan, true to his hairstyle... and his terrifying glasses. Will we know if he is good or bad by then?
More and more questions
In the end, the drawings leave several questions unanswered: Will One Piece continue to be published when the current readers turn 40 and 60? What names are left to be made? Which characters will end up with their good version and which with their bad one?
