Activision gives in to the poor reception of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and announces drastic changes for the future of the series
The creators of Call of Duty announce a 180-degree turn for the franchise in response to the lukewarm reception of Black Ops 7.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be a turning point for the franchise due to its generally poor reception. The latest installment in the franchise has put Activision on the ropes, forcing it to rethink its short- and medium-term strategy for the series. For now, a major change in its annual release plan has been announced, and there will no longer be two consecutive years with two consecutive installments of Modern Warfare or Black Ops, as was the case in 2022-2023 and 2024-2025.
Activision goes to DEFCON 1 in response to the poor reception of Black Ops 7 and announces drastic measures in the short and medium term
In a blog post published on December 10 on its official website, Activision announced the most drastic change in the recent history of Call of Duty, and we’re not talking about new adjustments to skill-based matchmaking. In a serious tone, the company sets out to make amends and promises that there will never again be two Modern Warfare or two Black Ops games in a row in two consecutive years in order to avoid the fatigue that many fans feel towards these games.

“We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully. To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward,” the letter begins. “With respect to Black Ops 7, we set our sights to deliver a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2 and the studios have poured their passion into making a great game that all of us are very proud of. But it’s one thing for us to say it, more importantly it’s up to you to try it and judge for yourselves,” the post continues.
With this last sentence, Activision and Treyarch encourage players to try Black Ops 7 for themselves instead of getting caught up in the negative comments on social media, where many label it “the worst COD ever.”

“We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year. We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.” In addition to this shift in direction for the franchise, Activision promises two more things for Black Ops 7: a free weekend of Multiplayer and Zombies modes starting next week, and new seasonal content for the game, ensuring that it will be supported throughout the year.
In this statement, Activision affirms that it takes player feedback very seriously and assures that appropriate measures are already being taken to prevent a fiasco of this magnitude from happening again.
