Update:

Life has changed a lot in 38 years. Sequels, prequels, prequels to sequels and animated sequels to prequels, cinematic universes and so on have flooded Hollywood, and it’s time for one of the 80s classics to make a comeback. With an always hilarious teaser trailer, Mel Brooks has given the first look at Spaceballs 2.

The sequel, originally announced last June, is in development with Amazon MGM Studios and will star Josh Gad. But what about the original stars?

Rick Moranis could return for Spaceballs 2?

According to a recent report from Deadline, sources say that both Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will return to reprise their roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively. As part of the same report, Keke Palmer will also join the cast. For the time being, Mel Brooks is officially returning - at 98 years old - in the role of Yogurt. Josh Greenbaum will direct. If the report is confirmed, this would be Moranis’ return to the movies after almost 30 years of retirement from acting.

The original film was released in 1987 as a parody of not only Star Wars, but other sci-fi classics of the time. The story followed the hero Lone Starr and his sidekick Barf, along with Princess Vespa, on an adventure to stop Dark Helmet and President Skroob from stealing Druidia’s atmosphere. Thanks to Brooks’ classic humor and a cast that managed to capture that unique tone, the film became a true cult classic.

For now, Spaceballs 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in 2027.
