‘Afterlife with Archie’ live-action series officially ordered at Disney+
The hit horror comic will receive a new adaptation from ‘Riverdale’ creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Archie and his friends are returning to live-action. And if you think ‘Riverdale’—the series that took the most famous comic book gang from 2017 to 2023 and plunged them into a very dark world—is intense, you haven’t seen anything yet. Disney+ has revealed that it has greenlit an adaptation of ‘Afterlife with Archie’, in which the town of Riverdale will be overrun by zombies.

The show will be based on the comic of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, released in 2013. The series’ logline reads: “When a supernatural spell cast by a certain teenage witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, Archie and his friends must fight to stay alive, putting to the test the friendships, romances, and loyalties that have always held them together.”
The series has been in development since last year on Disney+ under a script-to-series commitment, and is expected to premiere around Halloween 2027. As of now, no cast has been chosen to bring Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and the rest of the Riverdale residents to life once again.
The series will feature Aguirre-Sacasa as showrunner (who was also behind ‘Riverdale’), as well as Jimmy Gibson, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redgman as executive producers. “This was the comic book that started it all. Before there was a Riverdale, before there was a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, there was Afterlife with Archie, which I collaborated on with the best horror artist in the business, Francesco Francavilla,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “Getting to turn Afterlife into a TV series for the amazing team at Disney+ with our incredible partners at Berlanti Productions, WB and, of course, Jon and his Archie family is truly a full-circle moment — and the ultimate dream project for me.”
