‘Alien: Romulus’ gets physical VHS release, another sign of retro revival

An edition that could mark the return of a format that defined an era.

Alien Romulus

Alien: Romulus’ is preparing for the release of its physical edition. The film, directed by Uruguayan director Fede Álvarez, has been a success that has put the saga created by Ridley Scott back on top, and now confirms a limited edition VHS release that is a dream come true for collectors. A fully functional VHS that also serves as a celebration of the 45th anniversary of the saga, with a unique cover that serves to release a release in this format that is the first made by a major studio since 2006.

‘Alien: Romulus’ has been available for digital purchase or rental on platforms since October 15th, while the physical edition in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD will be available on December 3rd, the same day as the VHS edition.

The physical retro phenomenon reaches the world of cinema

In an increasingly digitalized world, few could have predicted that the physical formats of the past would become increasingly important and represent a significant market for a large number of consumers. The resurrection of vinyl is a reality in a music world where cassettes are also becoming an option for consumers. It was only a matter of time before the movie world returned to a format as popular as VHS, and there are already many who are betting on it, in a limited way, testing how it works, but it is a first approach that starts as a curiosity, but in time may become a new and established phenomenon. For younger readers, VHS was the reigning video format in the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, in a world that didn’t even dream of streaming or high definition as we know it today. However, unlike vinyl, which has better sound quality than, say, CD, the quality of VHS is not the same as Blu-ray, though.
