Amazon’s $10 million MrBeast winner reveals the show’s strict rules: “You’re just in a different world”
Build a city from scratch: homes for up to 50 people.
Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has become one of the most influential figures on YouTube thanks to his ambitious challenges and huge prizes. With nearly 370 million subscribers, his contests often involve tests of endurance, skill, and chance that can win contestants millions of dollars. His latest project, Beast Games, broadcast on Prime Video, was one of the most impressive to date. A colossal production and a record $10 million prize for the winner.
Confiscated technology and total isolation
In an interview with the UK’s Daily Mail, Jeffrey Randall Allen, the 44-year-old winner of the challenge and father of two, revealed that the contestants had all their technology confiscated before the program began. “They took away all of our technology and locked it in the safe,” the winner explained. He explained that they were not allowed to keep their phones, computers or smartwatches. And it was the lack of a watch that caused the contestants to completely lose track of time.
“I remember it was the second to last challenge in episode nine, I got to talk to somebody on the Towers (one of Mr Beast’s employees). I remember asking them what they were doing tomorrow, and they told me ‘The NFL season is starting.’ And I just remember thinking, ‘It’s September already?’... You’re just in a different world.” The taping of this competition took place over several months and most of the tryouts took place between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., a revelation that surprised many fans of the show.
An abysmal production
To accommodate the 1,000 participants, the production had to build a city from scratch. Allen described the accommodations as like a summer camp. There were many houses, and each house could accommodate up to 50 people. But not without the comforts of individual showers and toilets.
As for his experience with MrBeast, Allen said the content creator exceeded his expectations. “‘He’s extremely talented and he’s kind of a philanthropist... he loves to give back. But I got a chance to hang out with him, and he is awesome,” he admitted. In turn, he mentioned that he admires the 26-year-old’s vision and believes he’s going to do amazing things.
