An ‘Interstellar’ fan finds a clue that, if true, would change the entire meaning of legendary movie

2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of ‘Interstellar’, Christopher Nolan’s most famous and arguably most popular film. Although it has its detractors (as does the British director himself), the film was a critical and box office success, grossing nearly $800 million worldwide. Interstellar’s themes of quantum physics, black holes, death, and the passage of time, combined with a stunning soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer, have made it a modern classic and one of the best films of the 21st century. Its complicated themes have left many viewers tearing their hair out trying to understand it, but none have gone as far as this TikTok user.

A content creator named @Stark_Verse found a new clue at the beginning of the movie that he says he can’t unsee. “I just rewatched ‘Interstellar’ and I noticed what seemed like a mistake [...] I just cannot unsee this,” he wrote in a viral post earlier this year.

A completely different movie

The user shares fragments of the movie that seem to be reused. The first is the plane that appears at the beginning of ‘Interstellar,’ when Cooper has the dream sequence of the crash. That scene is repeated an hour later when his crew enters the atmosphere of Miller’s planet. “It’s the exact same footage, and at first I thought it was a simple mistake, but then I realized this is Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan wouldn’t reuse the same footage without a purpose right? It just didn’t make sense until I looked at it from another perspective,” he said.

The really weird thing about the sequence is that, in his words, “the person in the accident was supposed to die, so what if that’s what really happened?“The content creator throws out his point of view and uncovers a clue that could change the meaning of the movie. “What if Cooper actually died in that accident right at the beginning of the movie?” he explains.

This suggests that one of the hidden meanings of ‘Interstellar’ is that Cooper suffered an untimely and accidental death, and that everything that follows reflects his “journey to the afterlife”. There are scenes that support this, such as the reference to eternal sleep (death) during the Endurance and the words of the children as they see him go. The TikTok user praised the director for all of this: “That’s the thing about these Nolan movies. They make sense on so many different layers, you can peel off the layer of science and it still makes sense in science, and you can peel off the same scene philosophically and it also makes sense, and then you apply the same thing spiritually and it also makes sense.”
