Arkheron: Bonfire Studios’ debut game blends strategy and chaos
Bonfire Studios’ debut mixes isometric free-aim combat, Relic builds, and tower-climbing tension.
Video game industry veteran Rob Pardo, founder and CEO of Bonfire Studios, has officially announced the studio’s debut title, Arkheron. The new game is a fast-paced, team-based player-versus-player (PvP) experience that merges elements from various genres but ultimately carves its own unique path. Revealed in a recent press presentation, Arkheron is an “Ascension Royale” where 15 teams of three players will battle their way to the top of a shifting, surreal tower.
According to Pardo, the game’s core philosophy centers on creating an environment for emergent player stories, focusing on social interaction and competition. The game is designed to provide deep mastery for highly skilled players while remaining accessible. It operates on an “items as heroes” system, where players find and combine items with unique abilities to create their builds on the fly. This means there are no predefined character roles or classes, and every match presents a fresh opportunity for players to adapt their strategy.
Gameplay and Unique Features
Arkheron’s gameplay is defined by several key features. The first is its isometric free-aim combat. While the camera is top-down, the controls feel similar to a shooter, allowing players to aim every attack and ability with precision. This, combined with a tight camera angle, keeps the action up close and personal, making positioning and awareness critical. Ranged and melee builds are equally viable, giving players more strategic options.
The core of Arkheron’s gameplay revolves around the concept that what you carry defines you. The items you loot are not just stat boosters; they are powerful abilities called Relics. Each one has the potential to completely shift your playstyle on the fly. Players can chase a full set of four matching Relics to transform into an “Eternal” and unlock a powerful fifth ability, or they can mix and match different Relics to create a “shattered” build with custom synergies. This system allows for incredible strategic depth, enabling players to create unique builds in real time that can be swapped out as the match progresses.
The “Ascension” mode redefines the typical battle royale formula. Instead of a single shrinking circle, the match is a series of escalating encounters. Teams must fight to secure a beacon on each floor of the tower to ascend to the next level. Only a few teams survive each stage, leading to a climactic, winner-take-all showdown on the final floor. This structure forces players into constant engagement and ensures that every win is hard-earned.
Combat is a central feature of the game, utilizing a free-aim isometric perspective that keeps the action tight and focused. The camera swivels to let players line up shots and dodge attacks in close range, making every engagement strategic and intimate. The immersive audio design also plays a crucial role, with subtle sound cues and music acting as vital keys to survival. The developers at Bonfire Studios have focused on creating an experience where you can hear the danger before you see it, amplifying the tension of every fight.
Bonfire Studios will launch Arkheron’s playtest from September 19 to 21, inviting thousands of new players to join the community. The studio emphasizes that the game is still in development and will continue to be refined through player feedback.
