Update:

The long-awaited leap of Assassin’s Creed to the small screen is finally underway. Ubisoft and Netflix have officially confirmed that filming has begun on the live-action series, marking a major milestone since its approval in July 2025. While details remain deliberately scarce, one key element has now been revealed: the story will be set in the year 64 AD, placing the conflict between Assassins and Templars in ancient Rome.

The cast is led by rising talents Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) and Toby Wallace (Babyteeth), signaling a clear focus on character. That approach aligns with the vision of showrunners David Wiener and Roberto Patino, whose past work on Halo and Westworld suggests an ambition to blend large-scale action with morally complex storytelling.

A new chapter in a familiar world

The year 64 AD is best remembered for the Great Fire of Rome, a catastrophe that reshaped the city and fueled long-standing rumors about the role of Emperor Nero. For Assassin’s Creed, this marks the first official exploration of Ancient Rome within the franchise, offering a fresh lens through which to expand its mythology.

Rather than attempting a direct translation of gameplay mechanics, the series aims to reinterpret the franchise’s core pillars—stealth, parkour, and precise movement—into a grounded, cinematic language that feels believable on screen. Visually, the tone is expected to lean toward the dark and oppressive, with Johan Renck, best known for directing Chernobyl, at the helm. His involvement hints at a prestige drama steeped in tension and atmosphere.
