Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora reveals its gameplay, story, release date, and more
Massive and Ubisoft have finally unveiled Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, showing off gameplay and even a release date alongside series creator James Cameron.
The new Avatar game was of the big stars of Ubisoft Forward 2023. Massive Entertainment (the creators of The Division) took advantage of the event to share the game’s first gameplay trailer and to confirm its release date. The game will arrive on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X | S on December 7.
Looking at the gameplay we find ourselves before a much more ambitious project than expected. This is not the typical lazy adaptation of a movie to take advantage of the hype. Even Cameron is proud of what we have been able to see and it was he himself who presented the game.
The game will be Avatar canon
Although Avatar Frontiers of Pandora will tell a totally new story and with characters different from the ones in the movies, it will belong to the canon. It is called that precisely because of where it is located and what role it plays within the saga. The game will be part of the main plot of Pandora, but it will not be like playing the events of the movies. The events of the game happen at the western frontier, that’s why it’s called Frontiers of Pandora, because it’ll happen in a different part of the moon of Pandora.
Why will it be in first person?
Regarding the controversial decision to make the game in first person, like a shooter, the studio has an explanation. According to Magnus Jansen, the creative director of Avatars Frontier of Pandora, when you move through their world you reach out your hand and move and touch the plants. Those interactions, that feeling of being there, is only given to you by the first person. “The experience with the fauna and flora of Pandora will be dizzying”. In addition, this will allow very particular gameplay while riding on the back of a banshee. “It is a level of immersion that has never been achieved. It will break the schemes and it is a totally fresh experience, It is not a simple adaptation of the films”.
Impressive graphics
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora will make use of an unseen version of a graphics engine from Ubisoft itself, Snowdrop, only compatible with PC and the new generation of consoles. The company has worked with the production companies in charge of the films, Lightstorm and Disney, to get the most out of the technology and boasts of having a new lighting system based on ray tracing. “The light filters through the leaves, which are translucent and dye the scenes in different colors and so on. There will be beautiful reflections in the water and levels even when the sky is cloudy.”
