‘Avengers: Doomsday’: this is how Kevin Feige got Robert Downey Jr. to come back as Doctor Doom
Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning to the MCU, not as Iron Man, but instead as Marvel’s biggest villain ever. But how did they get him to return?
Robert Downey Jr.’s absence from Marvel Studios productions didn’t last too long. The actor will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, although he will not play Tony Stark, but rather Doctor Victor Von Doom. The man who was Iron Man for over 15 years will leave his heroic side and embrace villainy. How did the idea come about? This was the conversation he had with Kevin Feige —head of Marvel Studios—, as he explained to The Hollywood Reporter.
“He said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me, if you were to come back …’” Then, Kevin Feige came up with the perfect way. Instead of resurrecting Tony Stark or bringing the character back with the excuse of the multiverse, the head of Marvel Studios told him the following. “How can we not go backwards? How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to beat expectations?” According to Robert Downey Jr., Feige brought the character of Victor Von Doom to the table. Later, already decided, the producer returned to the fray: “Let’s get Victor Von Doom right.”
At that time, the performer was already meeting with Disney to work on a new collaboration, although this time related to the Disneyland theme parks. Bob Iger, the CEO of the company that owns Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, and Marvel, also liked the idea. “You want to talk about two guys that are not easy to have their minds blown, let alone at the same time,” Downey said. “What is going on there, right now, is so beyond my expectations of what was possible.”

The actor who played Tony Stark for almost two decades also played the character again, although this time for a new Disney theme park attraction. He did so for the Stark Flight Lab, which will be located at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus. The visitor will become a superhero, guided by the voice of Iron Man’s experience. “You will sit in a two-person capsule and be deployed to a testing station. “Next, a robotic arm will grab your capsule and spin you around in a simulated battle.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will hit theaters on May 1, 2026, while ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will do the same on May 7, 2027.
