Obsidian Entertainment

Avowed will have no classes to choose from, as Obsidian states that “there is no one perfect build”

Developers at Obsidian shared more details about Avowed, revealing that freedom is at the center of the game with plenty of choices to make throughout the story.

Avowed

Western RPG fans already have a game in their sights this year, and it is none other than Avowed, the first-person adventure by Obsidian Entertainment, and of which we saw more in depth in the last Xbox Developer Direct. However, in a surprising twist the studio has confirmed that there will be no classes, which does not mean, according to them, that we cannot build our desired character as we want it, but quite the opposite: “there is no one perfect build,” said Gabe Paramo, gameplay director of the game.

RPG with Obsidian DNA

“At Obsidian, it’s your world, your way, right?” Paramo said in an interview with GamesRadar. “We want to give the player the freedom with the dual wielding system. You know, with combinations – or ‘combinatorics’ as I call it; people make fun of me for using this term. It’s being able to put a pistol in my right hand and a shield in my offhand. I’m blocking and I’m firing. It’s the choice and consequence with things like, I’m using a dagger that’s quick and it’s more silent, and I’m using a pistol that’s loud and has a little bit of a reload recovery time on it.’

Of course, each choice when it comes to combat has its pros and cons. “There is no one perfect build, there’s gonna be, again, choice and consequence for what you kit out with your character.” Paramo continues to explain.”

But Avowed will not only live on combat, and fans of elections tied to history can rest assured. “Our approach to choice and consequences is to eschew a black-and-white, good-versus-evil morality scale, where the moral balance of your decision is very obvious,” says Carrie Patel, director of the game, in the same interview. “Rather something that feels closer to life, where sometimes it’s not obvious or sometimes the right choice feels obvious, but the outcome can be surprising; justified but surprising.”

Avowed will arrive later this year in 2024 on Xbox Series and PC, being included in the Xbox Game Pass catalog.
