Baldur’s Gate 3 moves up PC release date and briefly delays on PS5

The Belgian developer claims that the game has more hours of cinematics than the entire Game of Thrones TV series.

Update:
Baldur's Gate 3

Larian Studios has announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been delayed for both PC and PS5. Through a community update, the developer has announced that the title will be released on compatible devices earlier than expected. Players will be able to explore the full version of the long-awaited video game on August 3, almost a month before the originally scheduled date.

The PlayStation 5 version will not be released on August 31 either, as it will have a very short delay of a few days. Thus, the adaptation for Sony’s machine will be available on September 6, just one week after the original date.

Baldur’s Gate 3 features more hours of cinematics than Game of Thrones

Michael Douse, publishing director at Larian Studios, commented that they are on the verge of hitting 60 fps on the PS5, which he called “ble considering the breadth and depth” of the game:

“It features over 170 hours of cinematics, more than twice the length of the entirety of Game of Thrones, and more than three times the dialogue of all three Lord of the Rings novels combined. It is a massive, expansive game that truly brings D&D to life, with multiplayer and split-screen co-op, and at a scale that’s roughly four times that of our previous game, Divinity: Original Sin 2.″

According to Douse, delaying the PC version when they already knew the title would be ready early was “the wrong move in such a busy launch period.” On July 7th, there will be updates during the From Hell: Release Showcase panel, which you can watch live. To whet your appetite, the studio has shared a number of curiosities and features:

  • It contains more than three times the dialogue of all the Lord of the Rings books combined. The Baldur’s Gate 3 script contains over 2 million words.
  • More than 170 hours of cinematics, twice the length of all Game of Thrones seasons combined.
  • 7 playable protagonists, each with their own rich stories, personalities, desires, and goals, as well as a world-class character creation system for custom characters.
  • Play as one of 11 selectable races and 31 sub-races, with different body types and unique characteristics
  • 12 classes and 46 subclasses, compared to the 10 “schools of magic” in Divinity: Original Sin 2
  • Over 600 spells and actions (not including upcasts), compared to 225 spells and player actions in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access for several years, but according to its director, Swen Vincke, players have only experienced “less than a quarter” of what the game “has to offer.” An Xbox version is not out of the question.
