Update:

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has marked the upcoming opening of the Obama Presidential Center with a pair of short promotional videos released to coincide with Star Wars Day. The videos feature a lighthearted exchange between Obama and actor Mark Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker, and serve as an official introduction to the center ahead of its public debut.

The Obama Presidential Center is a 19-acre campus located on Chicago’s South Side, developed with the stated goal of focusing on civic engagement and youth leadership rather than functioning solely as a traditional presidential archive. The May 4 release date was chosen as a thematic nod rather than a central focus, with the videos using humor to draw attention to the center’s broader mission.

A focus on civic engagement

In the clips, Obama and Hamill exchange jokes referencing Star Wars, but the messaging emphasizes the center’s purpose as a space intended to encourage young people to engage with public life and social issues. Obama reiterates that the project is designed to highlight how individuals from non-privileged backgrounds can create meaningful change, positioning the center as a resource for education and community involvement rather than a retrospective monument. This should not surprise anybody, since actor Mark Hamill, has been a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party and Barack Obama.

The campus includes a museum covering Obama’s presidency, alongside a new branch of the Chicago Public Library, public park space, playgrounds, art installations, and dining facilities. One of the largest features is a 60,000-square-foot athletic center, which includes a regulation-size basketball court.
