Batman: Knightfall animated movie announced — Release window, story and first details

DC confirms multi-part adaptation of the classic Bane storyline coming in 2026.

Update:

One of the most iconic stories from the early 1990s comics, Batman: Knightfall, will receive the animated treatment next year. This was announced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment at their panel this afternoon at New York Comic Con.

The animation will be divided into parts, with Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall arriving sometime in 2026. For now, details have been scarce, with only the film’s logo and plot synopsis being revealed, which reads as follows:

“When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

It will be directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales serves as Supervising Producer alongside Producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers on Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall.

What is Batman: Knightfall about?

This comic ran from 1993 to 1994 and has been one of the most iconic moments of the Caped Crusader: Bane breaking his back, a moment that even made it into Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

The Knightfall story follows Bane as he sets out to conquer Gotham City, but first, he has to destroy Batman. Freeing all the villains from Arkham Asylum, Bane manages to track down Batman, breaking him mentally and physically before finally ambushing him and breaking Bruce Wayne’s back over his knee, crippling him.

Bruce Wayne, trying to reclaim the city, appoints Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) to take his place as its protector. But Jean-Paul’s more violent tendencies make him a more lethal Batman, becoming an unstable and brutal vigilante. With Alfred’s help, Batman manages to recover from his back injury to challenge Jean-Paul and reclaim his place in Gotham City.
