Battlefield Redsec is real: EA confirms free-to-play battle royale
Update:

The long-rumored and heavily leaked battle royale mode for the Battlefield franchise is officially real. EA and Battlefield Studios confirmed today that Battlefield Redsec—the name is a contraction of “Redacted Sector”—will launch tomorrow, October 28th. The announcement, which confirms months of speculation, was unveiled through a gameplay trailer premiere countdown on the official Battlefield YouTube channel, featuring a banner that confirmed the mode’s name and free-to-play nature.

This highly anticipated new experience will go live for all players at 10 AM EST / 7 AM PST. The launch of Battlefield Redsec is set to dramatically expand the game’s community, as it is being released concurrently with the debut of Season 1 for the main title, which also brings a new map, mode, and several new weapons.

Free-to-Play access opens the Battlefield to everyone

The most significant detail for the global community is the model of distribution. Battlefield Redsec will be a truly standalone experience, much like major competitors in the genre. The mode is confirmed to be free-to-play (F2P), meaning players do not need to own the full Battlefield 6 game to download and jump into the massive competitive action.

This approach guarantees that the Redsec experience will have the widest possible audience, providing a deeper pool of players for maximum engagement and ensuring faster matchmaking. For players new to the Battlefield universe, this F2P access is an excellent opportunity to sample the franchise’s signature scale and core gunplay mechanics without any financial commitment, directly positively impacting the player’s experience by making the action highly accessible from day one.

While EA has not yet disclosed the official finer details of the Battle Royale experience, such as the final map size or specific gameplay mechanics, the mode has undergone rigorous testing. The studio previously ran playtests in Battlefield Labs, which they referred to as the series’ “most ambitious community collaboration.”
