Beloved Marvel actor turned down the role of Poseidon in Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to focus on his new role in the MCU
The Russo brothers claim Robert Downey Jr. is writing parts and ideas for his new character in the MCU.

If there is an actor who has shaped the MCU, it is Robert Downey Jr., who in fact, starred in the film that officially kicked off this superheroic universe in cinema, ‘Iron Man’ (2008). In an unexpected turn of events, at the last Comic Con in San Diego, the actor surprised everyone by unmasking himself as the new big bad of the MCU, Doctor Doom, a role so important to him that it has even led him to reject others that could have earned him quite a few benefits and who knows if even awards.
We are talking about ‘The Odyssey’, Christopher Nolan’s next film based on Homer’s poem and that promises to be the most epic production of the coming years, with a cast already impressive: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, John Bernthal... And to which Downey Jr. could have been added, since he was contacted to play none other than the god of the seas in Greek mythology, Poseidon.

Why did Downey Jr. turn down a role in ‘The Odyssey’?
The answer is simple: the dedication the actor is putting into his role as Doctor Doom is at its peak, to the point that the Russo brothers - directors of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ - have assured that he is already getting into the role of the villain. “He’s writing his back story, ideas for the suit.... he really loves three-dimensional characters, and he sees an opportunity here,” Anthony Russo said recently. The brothers are currently promoting ‘The Electric State,’ which premieres next week on Netflix, but are obviously often asked about the future of the MCU.
