2023 in Review
Best Multiplayer Games of 2023 on PS4, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC
We took a look at what the best multiplayer games of 2023 were in different categories, so here’s a list of our favorites.
2023 will be remembered as one of the best years in video games. We’ve reached the final stages of a new year and it’s time to choose the GOTY among a selection of the best that has appeared during these last twelve months. The competition was fierce in this year 2023 that is leaving us soon. Here is the list of what we think are the best multiplayer games of 2023, in alphabetical order:
Advance Wars 1&2: Re-Boot Camp
The best strategy is back in the middle of 2023 after several delays in its release. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp compiles two remakes of the two Advance Wars for the Game Boy Advance. These are games that were among the best of their genre at the time, and two decades later, they are still perfectly playable. Their incredibly thoughtful approach makes them very good multiplayer games, especially considering that, as in the originals, up to four people can play with a single console and a copy of the game passed between them, thanks to the fact that they are turn-based strategy video games.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3, considered by many to be the masterpiece of Western RPGs, also has one of the best multiplayer modes of the year. Not only is it an RPG with almost unparalleled freedom when it comes to the different situations it presents us, but we can also enjoy this excellent video game in cooperative mode. This is the definitive Dungeons and Dragons experience in video game format, including twenty-sided dice rolls.
Diablo IV
The Diablo saga returns in style in 2023 with Diablo IV. This action RPG and dungeon crawler continues the tradition and features multiplayer modes that allow us to explore dungeons and face all sorts of beings and creatures of the underworld while looting them thoroughly to improve our equipment. It’s not enough just to hit and hit; we have to equip our characters with our heads, knowing what’s more effective against whom and communicating and coordinating with our friends if we want to survive everything the game will throw at us.
Lethal Company
Although it is still in Early Access, Lethal Company has become one of the great multiplayer surprises of 2023. In this cooperative horror game, we play as workers for “The Company,” and our job is to travel to the most inhospitable places in the galaxy to collect scrap metal to complete our workday. The problem? The places we visit are infested with all kinds of traps, dangers and monsters. Player cooperation is not only necessary, but mandatory if we are to return home alive and put a plate of hot food on the table.
Mortal Kombat 1
The latest installment in the Mortal Kombat saga is one of the best multiplayer games of the year. Mortal Kombat 1 doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but its Kameos system (Marvel vs. Capcom-like assistants) feels both familiar and different from what we’ve seen in this long-running video game series. The usual gore is also present, and although we can duel with players from all over the world thanks to the online modes, there is nothing like killing the fighter of the friend sitting next to you with a Fatality. And the best way to play a fighting game will always be on the same platform and on the same couch.
Party Animals
Party Animals is a peculiar battle royale in which we control cute animals that look like stuffed toys. The fun of the game is that the adorable appearance of the controllable characters is complemented by a system of exaggerated physics, which means that when we hit or grab the opponents, they shoot out in a very funny way. A good option to consider thanks to its aesthetics and its entertaining multiplayer modes, and it’s also on Game Pass!
Street Fighter 6
Street Fighter 6 is the other fighting game that made it into our top multiplayer games of the year. The sixth numbered installment of the franchise is also the most technical and spectacular, both graphically and artistically. And like any good fighting game - and more of a Street Fighter - it lends itself very, very well to couch battles. Although we have online modes to face players from around the world, there is nothing better than going head-to-head against our friends on the same console or PC.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the new 2D Mario on Nintendo Switch, is also one of the best multiplayer games of the year. It is an absolutely excellent title in all of its sections, which we can also play in cooperative mode with up to three other people. It is a very polished game and full of content, which alone makes it one of the great essentials of the Switch. A very good option to consider if we have one or more children at home and want to take them by the hand through the wonderful virtual worlds of Wonder.
