‘Borderlands’ first trailer gives us Cate Blanchett and company mowing down psychos in Pandora

Lionsgate has just released the first trailer for ‘Borderlands’, director Eli Roth’s live-action adaptation of the Gearbox looter shooter that changed the industry.

After a long period of silence and some very nerve-wracking cast choices and rumors coming from the set, the first trailer for the ‘Borderlands’ movie is finally here… and it looks better than expected!

Filled to the brim with jokes and gags, as well as tons of shooting, monsters and evil corporations, this first trailer is actually a very good look at the world of Borderlands. Not only do we get Skags and Rakks littering the wasteland, but it seems like our movie squad of Vault Hunters takes enough inspiration from their video-game counterparts to be exciting enough.

We’ve already had our first look at the heroes thanks to the release of a pair of photos from the set, but seeing them in action is a bit relieving: they may be fundamentally different from what we know, but the essence of the characters is clearly there. Both Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett) and Roland (played by Kevin Hart) look extremely similar to their respective counterparts, with outfits that deviate very little from their original designs. But while it was obvious that Claptrap, who’s portrayed in full CGI, was going to adhere closely to what we expected him to look like, Jack Black’s voice for him fits the crappy robot well enough.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Patricia Tannis was an extremely unexpected casting decision, but it’s very difficult for the actress to not have fun while playing a character like this, and her quick quips in the trailer confirm that she’ll bring the madness that is expected of her. Meanwhile, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina could be a little more energetic to fit the role of the tiny maniac, but she’s still close to perfect with the rabbit ears and huge explosions.

Krieg (played by Florian Munteanu) sadly doesn’t get any lines in the trailer, so we’ll have to wait and see if he still graces the world with its poetic insanity or not. But just like him, we also see glimpses of many other characters and groups from the world, including Mad Moxxi, Marcus the Arms Dealer, what seems to be General Knox and his second in command (as well as the Crimson Raiders), and many more.

The adaptation takes elements from the first two games of the series, and mixes them up to tell a familiar yet different story. But it’s clear that they’ve captured the ridiculous energy of the games, even if its shoved through a Hollywood filter. Honestly, were we expecting anything else than potty and sex jokes, quirky characters, and weird guns?
