Bungie reveals a new Marathon during PlayStation Showase 2023

The studio’s first new project in just over 10 years, Bungie returns to its shooter roots with the announcement at the PlayStation Showcase.

This afternoon, as part of its participation in PlayStation Showcase 2023, Bungie revealed a new installment in the Marathon series, its first in 27 years and its first new project in just over 10 years since the announcement of Destiny.

Although the trailer was really a concept issue that did not show as such gameplay, fans of the studio and of shooters recognize the foundations that Marathon served for Bungie and for the Halo franchise. However, details of Marathon’s story have been revealed on the PlayStation Blog, along with an interview with some members of the development team: “Marathon will find players engaging one another as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches, fame, and infamy.”

Christopher Barret, Marathon Game Director, mentioned that this title “It’s not a direct sequel to the originals, but something that certainly belongs in the same universe and that feels like a Bungie game. Finding those opportunities to nod to the universe’s lore, while also getting to build something different and new has been one of the best parts of developing this game so far.” Marathon does not have a launch window at this time

Bungie, now part of the PlayStation family

In early 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its intention to purchase Bungie for $3.6 billion, which was made official in July of that year. Despite this, the promise by Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, that Bungie “will remain an independent and multiplatform studio and publisher” was kept. Marathon will not be a PlayStation exclusive, as the title will also be coming to the Xbox series and PC.
