Can Superman rescue the DC Universe? Two TV spinoffs reportedly in the works

James Gunn’s reboot is already inspiring new shows, here’s who’s getting the spotlight.

Update:

James Gunn’s 'Superman is officially in theaters, and early reactions suggest it’s the reboot DC desperately needed. But the studio isn’t stopping there. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, DC Studios is already considering two TV spinoffs based on standout characters from the film.

Who’s getting a spinoff?

The two characters reportedly being eyed for solo series are:

  • Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi): A genius inventor and member of the Justice Gang, Mister Terrific stole scenes with his tech-savvy combat and dry wit. In the comics, he’s known for his T-spheres, Olympic-level athleticism, and 14 PhDs.
  • Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo): The Daily Planet photographer has long been a fan-favorite, and his quirky, heartfelt portrayal in 'Superman’ has sparked interest in a character-driven series. DC Comics previously ran Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen for over 160 issues.

Both characters are part of Gunn’s ensemble cast, but their breakout performances have reportedly pushed them to the front of DC’s TV slate.

What’s DC’s plan?

DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are aiming for a steady content pipeline:

  • Two live-action films per year
  • One animated film per year
  • Multiple live-action and animated TV series annually

Upcoming projects include 'Peacemaker’ Season 2 (August 21), 'Lanterns’ (2026), and 'Paradise Lost’, a Wonder Woman prequel series still in development. The goal is to slowly rebuild the DCU, character by character, before launching a new 'Justice League’ film.

These spinoffs signal a shift in strategy. Rather than rushing into team-ups, DC is focusing on character depth and world-building, giving lesser-known heroes room to shine. It’s a formula that worked for Gunn with 'Guardians of the Galaxy’ and 'Peacemaker’, and it may be the key to restoring fan trust in the DC brand.
