Capcom confirms a new Resident Evil is in development, with the director of RE7 at the helm

A new mainline Resident Evil game is on their way, with the director of RE7 promising a very “substancial” title using everything they’ve learned from the previous games.

The rumors about a possible Resident Evil 9 have been constant since the start of the year, as many fans of the series expected the game to make an appearance during the many summer game announcement and update presentations. But while it didn’t happen, Capcom has just announced that they are actively working on a new game, and they’re certain it’s the biggest project in the franchise yet.

During the recent Capcom NEXT online presentation that took place on July 1, 2024, Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, confirmed the upcoming title while talking about a new mobile release for the previous game. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7],” he said. “But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

The future of the Resident Evil series is on its way

Curiously, this quick announcement came immediately after talking about how the franchise had lost it way and that they needed to correct the direction they had taken, as they had focused more on the action elements of the series. Perhaps this is an indication that RE9, or however the next game is called, will rely heavily on horror and survival elements once again, instead of pushing even harder into high-octane action.

Rumors of what this new game may end up being have been around for a few months now, with renowned leakers claiming that the game would offer an open-world experience supposedly similar to that of Dragon’s Dogma 2, with a setting in a rural town in Southeast Asia on a “Singapore-inspired island,” with Leon S. Kennedy once again in a starring role.
