Cartoon Network website shut down by Warner Bros. Discovery
Cartoon Cartoons!
An Internet era is over. The Cartoon Network website has shut down completely, as Warner Bros. Discovery has pulled the plug on all of its content. Visitors to cartoonnetwork.com will now be redirected to Max’s site.
The new special landing page for Warner’s streaming service welcomes users and invites them to subscribe to watch their favorite cartoons: “Looking for episodes of your favorite Cartoon Network shows? Check out what’s available to stream on Max (subscription required),” reads the pop-up upon entering the site. “Sign up for Max, where you can also create a Kids Profile with ratings restrictions and additional privacy protections to keep it fun and kid-friendly! Cable subscribers, continue to enjoy your favorite CN programming on your TV and connected apps as well!”
Warner Bros. Discovery, for its part, gave no warning of the site’s closure, simply shutting it down from one day to the next. This will not affect the cable TV channel, as the programming will be maintained every day. For its part, a Cartoon Network spokesperson offered the following statement to Variety: “We are focusing on Cartoon Network shows and social media, where we see the most consumer engagement and significant potential for growth.”
On the other hand, Gizmodo notes that this is not a change for all Cartoon Network sites, as some international versions are still active and offer more localized experiences. However, it is not clear if these sites will face the same fate as the original site in the future.
It’s worth noting that Warner Bros. Discovery is going through a very rough patch right now, announcing this morning that Q2 earnings are down 6%, with losses approaching $10 billion. This has prompted the company to continue cutting costs, including last week’s announcement that it will shut down Boomerang, the classic cartoon streamer, and migrate its content to Max, effective September 30.
