Catherine O’Hara, legendary star of ‘Beetlejuice’ and ‘Home Alone’, dies

One of Hollywood’s most beloved stars has gone out. Catherine O’Hara has passed away at the age of 71 from causes that have not yet been revealed. The portal TMZ has confirmed the tragic news. The actress becomes one of the first major losses of this 2026.

The kindness and warmth that characterized Catherine O’Hara in life is a mark that will never be erased. Trained in the Canadian improv scene, O’Hara made the leap to film in the eighties after establishing herself on the show ‘SCTV’ (1976–1984). Her major breakthrough in popular culture came with ‘Beetlejuice’ (1988), directed by Tim Burton, where she played the eccentric and pretentious Delia Deetz. The character became an immediate icon and marked the beginning of a collaboration with the filmmaker that would last for years.

In the early nineties, she rose to massive popularity thanks to ‘Home Alone’ (1990) and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ (1992), in which she played the protagonist’s mother. Although these were high-consumption family comedies, O’Hara provided an interpretative energy that avoided clichés and reinforced her presence in cinema for all audiences.

Concurrently, she forged a career in auteur cinema alongside director Christopher Guest. Films such as ‘Waiting for Guffman’ (1996), ‘Best in Show’ (2000), ‘A Mighty Wind’ (2003), and ‘For Your Consideration’ (2006) consolidated her critical prestige. In these improvisation-based mockumentaries, O’Hara demonstrated an exceptional ability to build complex and tremendously human characters, considered by many critics to be the best of her filmography.
