Update:

For years, Charizard has reigned supreme in the Pokémon card market. Its 1999 holographic version sold for more than $300,000 at auction, cementing his status as one of the most recognizable icons in the collectible card game. But against all odds, it now seems to have an unexpected rival... and it’s also a Fire-type.

We are talking about Torchic [Gold Star] #108 from the Team Rocket Returns collection, an extremely rare card that is currently being auctioned on eBay for over $2,500. This is an EX-era card marked with the iconic gold star next to its name, a symbol that it is part of a very limited run. These Gold Star cards were released between 2004 and 2007, and are now considered true gems by collectors around the world.

Charizard has a new rival in the Pokémon TCG

Why is this particular card causing such a stir? First, because of its rarity: hardly any copies were printed, and many of them have not survived in good condition. In addition, its design (with Torchic in the shiny version) makes it especially appealing to the most nostalgic fans. In fact, on other platforms such as Cardmarket, some sellers have listed it for around 6,000 euros (about $6,757), although this price does not always reflect its real value.

As Pokémon TCG experts remind us, the price at which a card is advertised is one thing, but the price at which it actually sells is another. For this reason, closed auctions on sites like eBay are a more reliable source for tracking the market. In any case, Torchic is experiencing an unexpected boom among collectors. Are we witnessing the beginning of a new Gold Star Card fever, and could it challenge Charizard’s throne? Only time and the market will tell.
