Charlize Theron on her lesbian scene in her most explosive movie: “I just loved it”
The famous actress delves into her bisexual character in ‘Atomic Blonde’ and explains what it was like to film her scenes with Sofia Boutella.

Charlize Theron, the celebrated actress who won an Oscar in 2003 for ‘Monster’ and has starred in numerous acclaimed films such as ‘North Country’, ‘Bombshell’, ’Mad Max: Fury Road‘, and ‘Young Adult’, has shown a strong inclination towards action cinema in recent years. From her fierce character Cipher in the latest installments of the ‘Fast & Furious’ saga to her superhero role in ‘The Old Guard’, as well as her cameo as Clea in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, among other roles. However, within her filmography is ’Atomic Blonde‘, a movie that John Wick himself would appreciate, featuring an explosive Charlize Theron who also had a lesbian romance with Sofia Boutella’s character (‘Rebel Moon’). These sensual scenes were something Theron embraced wholeheartedly: “I just loved it,” she stated in an interview with Variety.

Charlize Theron and her intimate scene with Sofia Boutella in ‘Atomic Blonde’
In the 2017 thriller directed by David Leitch, Charlize Theron’s character, the spy Lorraine Broughton, shares the spotlight with a significant actor like James McAvoy, her battle ally – with a twist. However, contrary to what one might expect from a typical action film starring a man and a woman, Theron’s relentless spy ends up having a relationship with another woman, played by Sofia Boutella as Delphine Lasalle, a French undercover agent who develops a romantic connection with Lorraine.

But what was it like filming the lesbian scenes of Charlize Theron with Sofia Boutella? The actress herself answers emphatically: “I just loved it. For so many reasons: My frustration of how that community is represented in cinema, or lack thereof. And also, it made perfect sense. It just suited her. It just felt there was a way through that relationship and the fact that it was a same-sex relationship to show a woman not having to fall in love, which is one of those female tropes. ‘It’s a woman; she better fall in love — otherwise, she’s a whore!‘,” the actress exclaimed.
So much so that Theron approved of these scenes and her character’s sexual relationship with Sofia Boutella’s as soon as she received the script from Kurt Johnstad: “It’s one of my most proudest parts of the development, when we came up with that,” Theron explained. “And then finding Sofia, that was a slam dunk. There’s something about her that’s so broken and vulnerable. It works”, the actress continued.
Furthermore, in the interview, this scene is compared to other typical action genre scenes, such as those in the James Bond saga, although Theron believes they managed to go a bit further in ’Atomic Blonde‘: “James Bond doesn’t have such hot you-know-what. I loved that we didn’t hide under the sheets. Now I’m generalizing. I haven’t seen a lot of the Bond movies lately. I’m sure there’s a lot of hot sex in it,” the actress concluded.
You can stream ’Atomic Blonde’ on Netflix, or rent/buy it on Amazon Prime Video.
