Christopher Lee’s worst enemy in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was as mundane as it could be
Sir Christopher Lee’s time as Saruman in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ saw him struggle with many enemies, including his own outfit and a set of stairs.
Saruman the White was the most powerful wizard in Middle-earth, a powerful wizard who fell into Sauron’s influence and later became his servant. The character, one of the villains of the ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, was played by Christopher Lee in the two Peter Jackson trilogies, whose filming process was extensively documented thanks to the extra content of the Extended Editions. Throughout these documentaries, it was revealed that the British actor had serious problems recording one of his scenes. His enemy was neither Gandalf nor Aragorn nor the Hobbits, but the long robe he wore and some treacherous stairs.
In the video, which can be seen just below these lines, Christopher Lee begins to perform one of his scenes inside the Tower of Orthanc. When he climbs the stairs he interrupts his sentence: “I’m sorry, I can’t climb these damn stairs properly, Peter.” Lee himself explained it later in the ‘Behind the scenes’: “The suit was extremely long and I had considerable difficulty climbing the stairs towards my throne.” According to the actor, at that moment a voice sounded near the camera that reminded him that he had achieved it that same morning: “They put me in my place.”
Christopher Lee returns in ‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’
The fact that Saruman will appear in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ was something that had already been confirmed for a long time, what was not known is that Christopher Lee’s voice would sound once again. The creative team has not used artificial intelligence, but has used content recorded by the actor for ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy. According to producer Philippa Boyens, they have managed to integrate the interpretation in a coherent way.
‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ is an animated film directed by Kenji Kamiyama, which will be released in theaters on December 13.
