Code Vein 2, first impressions: Time travel and a revamped combat system

In 2019, a new proposal burst onto the soulslike genre scene with a dark anime aesthetic and a dynamic class system. Code Vein not only managed to captivate enthusiasts of extreme challenges, but also built a loyal fan base thanks to its dramatic narrative and memorable characters. Now, after more than six years of waiting, in December and prior to The Game Awards, we had the opportunity to test Code Vein 2, a title that seeks to expand the franchise’s DNA under a much more complex narrative premise: saving the future by intervening in the past.

What is the story about and why are we traveling back in time?

The plot of this sequel is set in an apocalyptic future where humans and Revenants—revived beings who need blood to stay sane—coexist in a world on the brink of total collapse. Civilization is threatened by the Lunar of Pieces, a celestial object that emerged after a failed ritual a century ago.

As protagonists, we will take on the role of one of humanity’s last hopes. The big news is that, in order to destroy the so-called children of the resurgence—monsters enclosed in giant cocoons—brute force alone will not suffice in the present. Accompanied by our ally Lou, we must travel 100 years into the past to interact with heroes of yesteryear and obtain the keys that will allow us to break the seals on these creatures. This time-jumping mechanic promises to bring a fresh twist to exploration and greater depth to the narrative.

How have the combat system and companions evolved?

The core experience remains an ARPG (action RPG), but with a more polished combat cycle, divided into weapon attacks, drains, and so-called Forme. The flow of battle consists of attacking to build up energy, performing a drain to obtain I-Core, and finally unleashing powerful magic or support abilities.

  • Weapon variety: There will be seven types of weapons, ranging from light swords and broadswords to bayonets and runic blades.
  • The system: We will also have special equipment on our backs that allows us to modify statistics and customize actions according to our playing style.
  • Dynamic companions: The partner system returns with two key functions. Summon, where the ally fights independently, and Assimilation, in which the character and their partner merge to boost stats during boss battles.
  • Skills: You can equip up to four offensive skills and one Defensive Forme, focused on parries or critical evasion maneuvers.

When will it be available and on which platforms?

Bandai Namco has confirmed that Code Vein 2 will be officially released on January 30, 2026. The game will be released simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, leaving the previous generation behind to focus on more detailed visuals and reduced loading times that make it easier to jump between eras, in addition to the impressive graphics presented.

It is important to note that one of the most beloved features of the first game, the character editor, returns with greater depth, allowing each player to design their ideal Revenant from the very first minutes of the game. Without a doubt, this sequel is shaping up to be a firm step toward consolidating Code Vein as one of the most important intellectual properties in Japanese role-playing, adapting to both new and experienced players alike.
