Concerns mount over whether Christopher Nolan’s first box office flop is imminent
A cast with big egos and salaries, cutting-edge technology... ‘The Odyssey’ will need a big box office to be profitable.

Although he has been one of Hollywood’s elite for decades, even Christopher Nolan is not immune to failure, and the excessive ambition that the director has shown with 'The Odyssey,' the adaptation of Homer’s work, is beginning to worry experts and critics. The first reason is the difficulty of making a historical film of this kind appeal to today’s audiences, who are less and less inclined to fill theaters with this type of production, especially when it comes to a Greek poem that not everyone knows, but is far from being the only one.
The other is a double-edged sword, and that is an absolutely scandalous cast: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson... A star-studded cast of this caliber can be an obvious draw for audiences, but it can also be a battle of egos that is difficult to manage, even for a director like Nolan, who turns practically everything he touches into gold and is also capable of bringing out the best in everyone.

The best example is ‘Babylon’. Who could have predicted the failure of a movie starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire, Emma Stone, Olivia Wilde and Samara Weaving? But it was a box office flop that even Robbie herself can’t explain.
It goes without saying that ‘The Odyssey’ will need a stratospheric box office to be profitable. We are not just talking about the high salaries of Nolan and the plethora of Hollywood stars who will be involved, but also the already very high budget. Filming will move from Morocco to the United Kingdom, passing through Sicily, bringing with it not only an array of people and props, but also the most advanced IMAX technology to bring this epic story to the screen with maximum fidelity.
What is Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ about?
Written by Homer, ‘The Odyssey’ is one of the most famous epics of ancient Greek literature. The story follows the adventures of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. During his ten-year journey, Odysseus faces many challenges, including encounters with mythical creatures such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the sorceress Circe, and the Sirens. He also has to deal with the wrath of the gods, especially Poseidon, who seeks revenge against him.
Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus face their own problems as numerous suitors try to claim the throne, believing Odysseus to be dead. The story culminates with Odysseus' return, his revenge on the suitors, and the restoration of his kingdom.
