Critics bow to 'Gladiator 2′: "one of the best of all-time"
The sequel to Ridley Scott’s epic film is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
With less than a month to go until the world premiere of ‘Gladiator 2′, critics are already giving the film a thumbs up. Ridley Scott is at the helm of this sequel to ‘Gladiator’, 24 years later, and all indications are that it will be even better, as early reactions to the movie have been tremendously positive. After a first screening in Los Angeles, numerous journalists and AMPAS and SAG voters have praised the film, which is expected to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
Early praise has gone straight to Denzel Washington, who plays Emperor Macrinus. Jillian Chilingerian of OffScreenCentral wrote: “Engrave Denzel Washington’s name on the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for ‘Gladiator 2′ right this instance.” KTLA contributor Scott Mantz called the film “an epic sequel,” adding that it has “great action, amazing visual effects, stellar performances across the board.” The most emphatic, however, was Matt Ramos, who stated that “’Gladiator II’ isn’t just arguably the best film of the year, it’s one of the best of all-time. It’s one of those films that will reinvigorate your love for cinema.”
The final touch for Ridley Scott
After the mixed reviews his last movie ‘Napoleon’ received, Ridley Scott hopes to end his movie career on a high with ‘Gladiator 2′. After a somewhat uneven decade, many claim that this is his best movie since ‘The Martian’, his best movie overall and one of the best in movie history. If this is indeed the case, ‘Gladiator 2′ will finally dispel the myth that “sequels are never good” and join ‘The Godfather: Part II,’ ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ and ‘Return of the King’ or ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’.
‘Gladiator 2′ will be released worldwide on November 15th and features an all-star cast including Paul Mescal, who is a strong contender for the Best Actor Oscar, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, who is the odds-on favorite for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Connie Nielsen, who reprises her role from the first film.
