Crunchyroll is making some big changes to its service, increasing prices for some of its tiers and restricting free trial periods even more.

It’s a sad day for anime fans, as Crunchyroll has announced they’re performing their first price increase since 2019, while also cutting down on free trials.

The announcement was made through Crunchyroll’s own blog and through email notifications to current subscribers, in which they reveal that the price hike will affect not only the United States, but almost 40 other countries and territories. The good news is that the cheapest option, known as the “Fan tier”, will remain priced at $7. However, every other tier will go up in price.

Effective immediately, the two most expensive subscription tiers will go up in price. It’s not a massive increase however, but any change could affect the way people enjoy their subscription:

  • The Mega Fan tier goes from $9.99/month to $11.99/month
  • The Ultimate Fan tier goes from $14.99/month to $15.99/month

According to the official announcement, these price changes reflect “the company’s investment in more anime, additional services like music and games, and additional subscriber benefits. The change will impact pricing in Argentina, Colombia, France, Portugal, the United States and select additional countries.” Additionally, the Crunchyroll Free Trial period is being reduced from the current 14 days down to only 7 days of free access.

As for when the changes will take place, the email sent to all subscribers reveals that new members are already subject to the new pricing, while current subscribers will be affected during the June billing cycle. “This is the first price increase in five years, and we are committed to bringing fans more of what they love - more access to the best anime from Japan.”
