Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement 7 years later to star in son's movie
The Irish actor will return to acting in ‘Anemone,’ the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis.
Daniel Day-Lewis is back. The Irish-born British actor announced his permanent retirement from acting in 2017. His representative at the time, Leslee Dart, confirmed to Variety that “this is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.” However, the bug has reentered Daniel Day-Lewis’ body and he is coming out of retirement after 7 years.
For a more than justified reason, since he will be the protagonist of “Anemone”, the movie that will be the directorial debut of his second son Ronan, who is 26 years old. The movie will focus on the relationship between fathers and sons and the dynamics of family ties. Seeing this, it was clear that the protagonist could not be other than Daniel Day-Lewis, who will return to give us a while more in front of the cameras.
Will he return to method acting?
Daniel Day-Lewis is considered one of the best actors in the history of cinema, not only because of his three Academy Awardsfor Best Actor (“My Left Foot” in 1989, “There Will Be Blood” in 2007 and “Lincoln” in 2012), but also because of his famous method. It consists in the fact that the actor does not play a character for a movie, but becomes the character, adapting his previous life to it. Numerous actors have used this method, such as Robert de Niro or Al Pacino, both students of acting director Lee Strasberg (Hyman Roth in “The Godfather: Part II”). Although Daniel Day-Lewis did not work with Strasberg, he falls into this category.
The Irishman pushed his performances to the limit, changing his facial gestures, voice, and posture for each character he played. He studied the behavior of the man he was bringing to life so much that he practically became him. For “My Left Foot,” in which he played a painter with cerebral palsy except for his left foot, he refused to leave his wheelchair for weeks and asked to be fed. In ‘There Will Be Blood’, he avoided all possible contact with Paul Dano, with whom he had an excellent relationship, but who played his enemy in the movie. In ‘In the Name of the Father’ he went three nights without sleep for the interrogation scene.
Daniel Day-Lewis is a living acting legend who will give us another performance by his son.
