Daredevil: Born Again' reveals one of its biggest mysteries: when do the events of this new series take place?
Wilson Bethel, Bullseye/Benjamin Poindexter in ‘Daredevil’, tells how the big time jump between that series and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will be.
Since news of its existence broke, one of the biggest mysteries and puzzles of ‘Daredevil: Born Again' has been knowing when the events of this new Disney+ series will take place. The anticipated return of the Man Without Fear brought with it many question marks, and the biggest of them all was revealed by Wilson Bethel, the actor who brought Bullseye/Benjamin Poindexter to life in Season 3 of Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ and who will return in Born Again. According to Bethel, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set five years after the end of ‘Daredevil’, which helps to better contextualize this encapsulated world within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Wilson Bethel (Bullseye in ‘Daredevil’) confirms when ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ takes place
In a recent interview with Collider, actor Wilson Bethel, who played Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye in ‘Daredevil’ and will reprise the role in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, has revealed that this new series will take place five years after the original. “I think one of the things that’s interesting is, I mean, maybe it’s different on a sitcom or something like that, but if you’re on a show for over a period of time and the characters are aging together sort of in real-time, and if the show is well written and the writers are sort of responding to that reality transpiring, the wrinkles of their hair, et cetera, then in theory, the character is evolving in a way, whether or not the show was on air,” the actor said.
“So there’s kind of like this funny thing stepping back after five years where ‘Born Again’ will pick up with that amount of time having transpired. The show doesn’t pick up the day after we last saw it. It picks up five years later. And so in theory, these are characters who have all lived five years of life and all of the twists and turns that you take in the meantime. So whether or not even those stories are necessarily on screen, there’s just that little extra bit of life in there, which I think is… as an actor, it gives you an opportunity to bring whatever your own journey has been in that time and they get sort of a little longer in the tooth.,” says Bethel.
‘Daredevil’ was already part of the MCU, but there were very vague references to the events of the Marvel movies, which did not help the immersion or the better integration of the two worlds, giving the feeling at times that they were not part of the same canon. However, with this better integration between the two worlds, everything is part of the same cinematic universe, which contributes to a greater plot coherence.
One of the most interesting aspects that Bethel comments on is the fact that this flashback may contain events that are significant to the lives of the characters, even though they are not shown as such. Matt Murdock, as well as the rest of the cast, can make comments or references to these unseen moments that may be relevant plot points in the “present”, or perhaps they can be recovered using the hackneyed resource of flashback.
In any case, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ has become one of the most anticipated Marvel productions of 2025. The planned premiere date for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is scheduled for March 4, 2025, and will air exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform. This first season will consist of a total of nine episodes.
