David Jenkins confirms his ‘Booster Gold’ series is no longer moving forward at DC Studios
The ‘Our Flag Means Death’ creator says his take on the long-awaited DCU project has been shelved.
The planned DC Universe series centered on ‘Booster Gold’ has suffered a major setback. David Jenkins, creator of ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ has confirmed that his version of the project is no longer moving forward at HBO and DC Studios. Originally announced in 2023 as part of the first slate of projects overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Booster Gold was intended to introduce one of DC Comics’ most unconventional heroes to the new shared universe.
Jenkins shared the news on Threads, where he referenced recent comments made by Mahershala Ali about Marvel Studios’ delayed Blade reboot. “My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.” Ali had recently said that if a studio truly wanted to make a project, “it would’ve happened,” adding that it was time to move on. Jenkins did not elaborate further on the reasons behind the decision.
What’s Next for Booster Gold?
When Booster Gold was first announced, Gunn described the series as a story about “a superhero’s imposter syndrome.” The character, Michael Jon Carter, is a disgraced athlete from the 25th century who steals advanced technology and travels back in time, posing as a superhero in pursuit of fame and fortune before gradually becoming a genuine hero.
Jenkins joined the project last year, writing the pilot and preparing to serve as showrunner should the series receive a full order. As recently as June, he said he had completed the pilot script and was pleased with the result.

Although Jenkins’ departure ends his involvement with the series, Booster Gold has not been officially canceled. According to a report from The Wrap, the project remains in active development at DC Studios, meaning the studio could move forward with a different creative team in the future. For now, however, the character’s live-action debut has been delayed as the studio continues refining its DC Universe slate.
