DC Universe chief reacts to Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom: “There’s no better than him”
Currently at the helm of the DC Universe, James Gunn praises the choice of Downey Jr. for the role of Doctor Doom.
The San Diego Comic Con left us with a huge surprise for the future of the MCU: Robert Downey Jr., one of the great architects of the success of this universe thanks to his role as Iron Man/Tony Stark, will play Doctor Doom, the big bad of what is to come. Although there were contrary reactions, the vast majority of fans were in favor of this choice, and that was the case of another participant as James Gunn, now at the helm of the DC Universe with Peter Safran.
Gunn, who directed all three ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ installments, thinks it couldn’t have been a better decision. “I thought it was a smart move, I was excited about it,” the director and producer recently told Josh Horowitz in an episode of Happy Sad Confused. “I also love Robert, so it’s... I think that’s cool. I think it’s... I think it’s a great idea, and I think that... you know, there’s no better than him.”
Gunn’s admiration for Downey Jr. goes back a long way, admitting at the time that his choice of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy was influenced by Tony Stark’s role. " I really wanted someone who could embody this character and take it beyond what was on the page, the same way Robert Downey Jr. did with Iron Man," Gunn confessed some time ago.
Gunn confirms talks to make Robert Pattinson’s Batman canon
In other DC Universe news, Gunn has confirmed rumors that surfaced a while back about the possibility of making ‘The Batman’ universe canon of his DCU. Warner Bros.' push for DC’s most popular character to already be canon made the director think about making Robert Pattinson his Batman. “I’ve contemplated it, yeah,” he said in recent days. But barring a last-minute surprise, he will remain part of his own Elseworld, the term DC uses to refer to its alternate realities.
