Dead or alive, You’re coming with me: RoboCop to return soon in Rogue City sequel

Fans of the most famous cybercop of all time are in luck, as the sequel to RoboCop: Rogue City (2023), considered not only the best RoboCop video game, but also a very worthy original story in the panorama of movie to video game adaptations, has been announced. RoboCop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business is a standalone expansion coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox X Series X|S in summer 2025. In this new installment, the story will take place after the events of the original game, but players will also have the opportunity to relive several moments from Alex Murphy’s past during his days as a Detroit police officer, so it will also function as a prequel to the original ‘RoboCop’ from 1987.

RoboCop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business arrives as a standalone expansion, which means that it will not be necessary to have the original game to enjoy the new adventure. This sequel to the 2023 title will be available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox X|S Series sometime in the summer of 2025, pending a more concrete release date. Despite the excitement generated by the announcement among RoboCop fans, it is still unknown if the title will be available in physical format for consoles, something that many gamers are eagerly awaiting. From what has been shown we can deduce that this new story, set before the third movie, will be full of both action and moral dilemmas.

In this new adventure, a group of elite mercenaries directly attack the Detroit police station with advanced experimental weaponry, causing significant casualties among the officers, in an assault that once again puts the forces of law and order of the violent American city in check. RoboCop, along with the few survivors, embarks on a mission to take over the OCP tower, where the mercenaries have barricaded themselves.

As he enters this dangerous operation, he will also face a stark moral reflection on his role: should the cops be more brutal than the criminals themselves in order to reduce crime? It seems that this dilemma will be one of the major themes of the new plot, bringing a new layer of complexity to the figure of RoboCop.

One of the big new features of the Unfinished Business storyline is the inclusion of Alex Murphy’s missions prior to his transformation into RoboCop, functioning as a prequel to the original 1987 film. Players will have the opportunity to delve into his past and explore, first-hand, his character as a tough and disciplined cop. It is not yet clear if these missions will be a traditional flashback or if it will be a “glitched” memory of RoboCop, similar to what was seen in the original game. Once again, Peter Weller has lent both his face and voice to bring to life both facets of the character - Murphy and RoboCop.

Gameplay-wise, RoboCop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business introduces new enemies, such as drones, which will diversify the threats we will face in the game world. Another new mechanic is to freeze enemies by shooting barrels of liquid nitrogen, which opens up new tactical possibilities in combat, taking advantage of the environment in our favor. Ultimately, it seems that the novelties on the gameplay level will not be many, and hence its expansion status. However, as Unfinished Business will serve to expand the narrative of the original, Nacon, its distributor, defines it as “crime doesn’t pay, but that doesn’t stop criminals from trying in this standalone sequel to RoboCop: Rogue City”.

Rogue City 2023 had a stunning visuals thanks to Unreal Engine 5, and many flashes of brilliance despite its occasional technical problems, so Unfinished Business is a must-buy for its fans. Hopefully, this title will be a new step forward for the franchise in video games, keeping the essence of RoboCop alive in the modern day while offering something fresh for gamers.
