Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster has removed the original’s controversial “Erotica” photo category

Players will no longer be able to make their PP (Prestige Points) grow through Erotica pictures in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s revamped photography mechanics.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will arrive in 2024 as an almost complete makeover of the original 2006 zombie game by Capcom, which was one of the first Xbox 360 exclusives at the time of the console’s launch. However, as they’ve done with most of their reworkings of classic games, the developers have chosen to take modern sensibilities into account when bringing back the classic titles. As such, it appears as though they’ve completely removed a small part of the game’s larger systems, as the “Erotica” category of the photos you can take in-game is no longer available.

This was first reported by Famitsu (via VGC), where they shared that Capcom had removed the “Erotica” category from the original Dead Rising. In the old title, players could earn Prestige Points (PP) by taking pictures in-game of a variety of situations and characters, which would then be scored by the game. The higher your score and the more varied categories appeared in the same picture, the more PP you would earn.

The categories available would be things like “Horror” when many zombies were in the frame, or “Action” if you caught an NPC fighting or shooting. “Erotica” was used when capturing sexual situations, such as exposed cleavage from female characters or more controversially, upskirts of even zombies. There was even a sidequest called “Cheryl’s Request” in which one of the survivors you could rescue would ask you to take pictures of her, all of which would land in said category.

While no details were revealed as to why this feature of the game has been removed, it’s not the first removal of its kind for the company. In last year’s Resident Evil 4 Remake, Capcom also removed the ability to see upskirts from one of the main characters, Ashley Graham, as well as modified several things in the game to make them less overtly sexualized.

This time, the removal (or censorship, as some have called it) of these features could affect the gameplay of the title, although in such a small portion that it could very well be ignored. However, we’ll have to wait and see how the final result looks like when we’re finally able to get our hands on Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster when it launches on September 19, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
