‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ almost had Nicolas Cage in as his version of Ghost Rider

Ryan Reynolds revealed that there were talks to bring back Nicolas Cage as the Ghost Rider in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, but things didn’t pan out.

Deadpool and Wolverine’ is the biggest hit of the summer, and new details and curiosities not only about the feature film itself but about its production keep popping up. The most recent revelation is that Ryan Reynolds intended Nicolas Cage to participate as Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Driver of the two ill-fated Sony Pictures films in which he starred. Unfortunately, Cage could not be counted on for the third installment of ‘Deadpool’.

In an interview with Collider, Reynolds himself revealed that there was an intention for Nicolas Cage to return to the big screen as Ghost Rider as a cameo in this third installment of ‘Deadpool’. Unfortunately this didn´t come to pass. Reynolds simply said: “Yes, it came to a conversation for sure. Yeah, but no”, not revealing more details regarding the reason why.

One could speculate it was a simple incompatibility of schedules—Cage starred in ‘Longlegs’ recently- or perhaps it was the actor’s own wishes to forget about the character after the 2012 film, which was the second and last time he played this superhero with powers of supernatural origin, although in 2023 he didn´t seem to be so reticent to return as this character.

Nicolas Cage was Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in two films: ‘Ghost Rider’ (2007) and ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ (2012). Although both were profitable and moderate box office successes, they received mostly negative reviews, especially the sequel.

One of the main attractions of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is its high number of cameos and its way of rescuing characters and actors from Marvel productions outside the MCU, so Cage’s Ghost Rider fits this description. This “excuse” for him to have been able to participate in this most recent adventure of the Merc with a Mouth would have also served to honor both the actor and the character for having played this Marvel superhero, just as it happened with others.
