‘Deadpool and Wolverine’: one of the biggest cameos reveals how Ryan Reynolds ‘fought for me and Gambit’
Another one of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’s amazing cameos has plenty of gratitude for Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and everyone behind the movie.
It’s no secret anymore that ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is a festival of cameos and all kinds of references. One of the actors who debuted in Marvel thanks to this film after a role that did not come to fruition at the time is Channing Tatum, who gave life to Remy LeBeau/Gambit of the X-Men. A decade ago there were plans for a solo movie about this character that ultimately did not materialize. Tatum has thanked Ryan Reynolds for the opportunity provided to bring this superhero to the big screen.
Channing Tatum’s emotional thanks to Ryan Reynolds for making his Gambit a reality in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’
In a post on his Instagram account, Tatum uploaded a post thanking Ryan Reynolds for making his version of X-Men’s Gambit able to reach the cinema thanks to ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’. Tatum plays him in this 2024 film, being a nod to the solo film he would have starred in during the mid-2010s if the project had not been canceled.
“These pictures are almost 10 years apart to the day. I sat in the audience when Ryan showed his first peek of Deadpool 1 to the world and I think I ran back stage right after and found him and I think I just hugged him and was like holy shit you did it man. It’s perfect. I didn’t know him really at all back then. But since then I can say that there is almost no one that has had my back in this industry more than Ryan.”
“I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But he fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy. Shawn Levy as well. Truly such a brilliant creator on every single level. All things happen for a reason. I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater. LFG!!”
What is known about Channing Tatum’s X-Men ‘Gambit’ movie and why was it canceled?
Around 2014, 20th Century Fox still owned the rights to several Marvel intellectual properties, the most profitable of all of them being ‘X-Men’.
Previously, the character had only appeared in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ (2009), played by Taylor Kitsch. But the producers decided to give the superhero another chance, in this case in a solo film that would have starred Channing Tatum.
During the production of the film multiple problems caused it to drag on for five long years. In 2019 the purchase of Fox by Disney came to pass, with the consequent cancellation of many projects, including Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’. This version of the character was dead for all intents and purposes.
Nevertheless, Thanks to the opening of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the concept of the multiverse, it was possible to bring back actors and actresses who had roles in Marvel productions before the MCU and even, as with the case at hand, that never came to exist. It is thanks to this that it has been possible to “rescue” Channing Tatum’s Gambit along with many other past characters such as Jennifer Garner’s Elektra or the Sabertooth by Tyler Mane.
