Akaza’s return shatters box office records, setting a new benchmark for anime cinema.

Update:

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle: Akaza Sairai has officially become the fastest film in Japanese history to surpass ¥10 billion (approx. $87 million USD) at the domestic box office. Released on July 18, 2025, the film sold over 9.1 million tickets in its first 10 days, eclipsing the previous record held by 'Mugen Train’.

What records did it break?

The film now holds multiple box office titles in Japan:

  • Fastest to ¥10 billion in earnings
  • Highest-grossing opening day: ¥1.64 billion ($11.1M)
  • Best single-day total: ¥2.03 billion ($13.8M)
  • Top opening weekend: ¥7.31 billion ($49.6M) over four days

These numbers reflect only domestic performance, global earnings are expected to surge when the film releases internationally on September 12, 2025, in over 150 countries, including IMAX screenings.

What’s the film about?

Directed by Haruo Sotozaki and animated by Ufotable, the movie kicks off the final arc of the 'Demon Slayer’ saga. It centers on the return of Akaza, Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki, and features a dramatic showdown with Tanjiro and Giyu Tomioka inside the shifting halls of the Infinity Castle.

This milestone not only cements 'Demon Slayer’s’ dominance in anime cinema, it also signals the franchise’s enduring global appeal. With two more films planned to complete the trilogy, 'Infinity Castle’ is poised to rival 'Mugen Train’s’ legacy as the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.
