Denis Villeneuve is disappointed that ‘Dune: Part 2′ is still number one at the box office

The big release in 2024 and its huge box office haul haven’t made the director too happy.

Denis Villeneuve is one of the great film directors of our time. The Canadian filmmaker managed to translate a work as complicated as Frank Herbert’s Dune in the best possible way, and its sequel became the biggest critical and box-office success to date in 2024. Villeneuve spoke about this success at the Canadian Screen Awards 2024, declaring that he was “disappointed to still be number one. I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.” Will any movie surpasses the gross of ‘Dune: Part 2′? One of the strongest contenders this summer is ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ which hits theaters on July 25.

“I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theater, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2. Of course, I’m talking about many movies. A movie like ‘Civil War’ for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theater,” Villeneuve said at the Canadian Screen Awards 2024.

The success of ‘Dune: Part 2′ worldwide

‘Dune: Part 2′ has managed to collect more than 700 million dollars worldwide, while in second place is ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ with 567 million dollars. A great figure that will not be difficult to overcome, but this summer will be a great opportunity for any movie to collect enough to snatch the first place to the work of Denis Villeneuve.

In the review of ‘Dune: Part 2′ by our colleagues in Spain highlighted that “it is an extraordinary movie that connects directly with the viewer through the senses, a visual spectacle like few others, with images of great beauty and a soundtrack that becomes one with the sands of Arrakis. To this we must add an excellent cast, a good story, and a director who deserves more recognition than he has”.
