Diablo 4’s Butcher, one of the game’s most terrifying bosses, just got even worse

With Season 1 about to be released, Diablo 4 players thought they were safe. But The Butcher just got a horrifying upgrade set to ruin your day.

Update:
Diablo 4’s Butcher, one of the game’s most terrifying bosses, just got even worse

Diablo 4 players have been running around Sanctuary for about a month since its release. The most rare items in the game have already been found, characters are reaching the level cap of 100, and people are getting stronger and stronger, ready to tackle what’s to come with the upcoming release of Season 1. But powerful as they may be, they all still fear The Butcher.

Series’ Posterboy and horrifying demonic abomination, you might know of The Butcher only as a legendary boss from the first Diablo that made another appearance in some of its sequels. Well, in Diablo 4 he’s back, and the thing is that he can appear without notice while you’re exploring dungeons or doing activities around the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re level 100, this powerful boss can kill easily kill you if you’re not ready for him. And now a player has revealed that them and their party of adventurers faced off against a giant version of the monster.

User IronHeart_777 on Reddit shared an image of the horrifying giant creature, which you can see above. As they say, their party was clearing a Nightmare Dungeons when they were suddenly besieged by the boss. “Suddenly this absolute beast of a Butcher comes running down a hallway towards us,” they said. “Never seen one this size before.”

An upgrade, or just pure bad luck?

Is this a surprise buff that Blizzard has given to the powerful demon? Well, not exactly. Other users have pointed since then that what they encountered doesn’t seem to be a special variant of The Butcher, but instead it’s the base enemy affected by the Nightmare Dungeon’s active modifier. In this case, it’s the Avenger Modifier.

What this does in any dungeon where it’s active is that every time you kill an enemy, all other nearby monsters grow in size and are buffed. User swissarmywolf explained that “It changes their size by a fraction for every kill,” and as the tactic is to clear out everything else before fighting The Butcher so you don’t get blindsided, the monster in question grew to a ridiculous size.

The Butcher is such a rare encounter in Diablo 4 that many players haven’t had the misfortune of being found out by him. As such, it’s no surprise that it has taken this long for people to find out he can actually be altered by modifiers inside of Nightmare Dungeons. The terror, like The Butcher, is only getting bigger.
