Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred gives a deep dive into the new upcoming class, the Warlock

Drawing from the dark legacy of the Vizjerei.

Update:

During the recent Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight, Blizzard Entertainment made two promises: this will be the Warlock’s year for Diablo in all of its versions, and that we would take a Deep Dive look at this new class coming for Diablo IV’s upcoming expansion, Lord of Hatred. The time has come to meet what their developers consider a “Metal Album come to life.”

Mastering the Soul Shard System

The Warlock introduces a highly tactical dual-resource system based on Willpower. The class operates using two distinct pools: Wrath and Dominance. Wrath is your tool for raw, chaotic destruction, allowing to tear through enemy ranks directly. Dominance, on the other hand, is used to summon powerful demons—or even just grotesque demonic parts—directly into Sanctuary.

Unlike previous iteration of summoners, the Warlock allows you to dictate exactly where your demons go, how long they remain on the field, and what state they are in. This means you can lock down difficult enemies, create strategic openings, and combine your movements to trigger devastating chain reactions.

Defining Your Playstyle with Soul Shards

To ensure every Warlock feels unique, the developers have implemented the Soul Shard System. This mechanic allows you to build your character’s identity from the ground up by selecting one of four primary Soul Shards, each granting a transformative passive ability and a dedicated demon pet. You can then further refine your build by selecting from three fragment sub-options, which act as specialization layers for your passive skills, resources, and abilities.

The four primary archetypes offer vastly different gameplay experiences. The Legion shard is perfect for those who want to overwhelm the enemy, spawning multiple physical demonic bodies that you can constantly reposition and chain together. If you prefer high mobility and frontline pressure, the Vanguard shard provides a fiery steed that acts as an aggressive demon, pushing enemies back and creating openings. For a more tactical, control-oriented approach, the Mastermind shard features a devouring shadow demon that allows you to orchestrate surprise assaults and manipulate enemy placement. Finally, the Ritualist shard turns the summoner trope on its head; instead of fighting alongside your demons, you sacrifice them to siphon their power, trading your offensive pet for massive bursts of personal strength and damage efficiency.

The Warlock’s deep connection to the dark legacy of the Vizjerei means they are constantly balancing their learned forbidden knowledge against a hunger for power. This is reflected in the Variant Expressions system, which allows players to radically reshape how their core abilities manifest in combat.

These push your skills in distinct directions. For instance, you might choose the Rampage variant to summon a massive brute that chaotically destroys everything in its path. If you prefer a more tailored approach, the Sigil of Summons lets you perform occult rituals to customize the exact horrors that emerge. For ultimate destruction, the Fiend of Abaddon variant summons a towering demon equipped with a hellforged, two-handed greatsword designed to decimate the battlefield completely. By turning the wrath of Hell against Mephisto himself, the Warlock promises an authentic and competitive gameplay experience that rewards aggression and precise command.
