Update:

The partnership between Disney and Epic Games may be evolving beyond collaboration. Following Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in the developer in 2024, new reporting suggests that some senior executives within Disney are considering the possibility of a full acquisition.

According to veteran tech reporter Alex Heath, speaking on The Town podcast, there is a distinct faction within Disney’s leadership waiting for the opportune moment to make a formal bid for the house that Fortnite built. “I know for a fact there are senior executives in Disney who want them to buy Epic and are just waiting for that moment,” Heath said. While the prospect of Disney owning one of the world’s most influential gaming platforms is massive, the internal sentiment isn’t unanimous. Heath noted that while some see the strategic value in owning the Unreal Engine and the “jewel in the crown” that is Fortnite, other senior figures remain skeptical, viewing the move as a potential risk.

The timing of these internal discussions is notable given Epic Games’ recent challenges. Despite its continued prominence, 2025 was a difficult year for the company, marked by declining player engagement and reduced spending. These pressures led to a significant restructuring effort, including the layoff of approximately 1,000 employees. Against this backdrop, deeper financial backing from Disney could provide greater stability for Epic’s long-term projects, including its expanding collaboration with Disney, which has been described internally as a large-scale, shared virtual environment. Reports indicate that this initiative is not expected to be publicly available until later this year.

Any acquisition scenario, however, ultimately depends on Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder and chief executive officer. As a privately held, founder-controlled company, Epic cannot be acquired without his approval. Sweeney has historically taken firm positions to preserve Epic’s independence, most notably in its public disputes with Apple and Google. At the same time, he has spoken positively about Epic’s relationship with Disney, particularly regarding the pace and scope of joint development efforts.

For now, there is no indication that a formal offer is imminent. Still, the discussion itself reflects how central Epic Games has become to broader entertainment and technology strategies, well beyond its origins as a game developer.
