Update:

Just like the Doctor’s own regenerations, ‘Doctor Who’ as a series has found itself in various streaming platforms on this side of the Atlantic. After wrapping up its time on Disney+, the series had been adrift in time and space, but the TARDIS has finally found a new home: AMC+.

BBC Studios has confirmed that the platform will be the new home where U.S. viewers can enjoy the adventures of the long-running science fiction series ‘Doctor Who’. Starting June 11, AMC+ subscribers will have access to a total of 13 seasons comprising 175 episodes, covering part of the series’ “Modern Era” from 2005 to 2022. This era covers the adventures in which Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker played the role of The Doctor, excluding the run featuring Tennant’s return as the Fourteenth Doctor or the arrival of Ncuti Gatwa during the Disney era.

“Doctor Who strengthens AMC+’s position as a destination for premium genre storytelling – curated franchises defined by iconic worlds, passionate fan bases and enduring cultural impact,” said Courtney Thomasma, Executive Vice President of AMC Global Media’s linear and streaming products. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Whoniverse into our home of fandoms, giving longtime fans a reason to return while inviting new audiences to discover one of television’s most beloved franchises.”

The future of Doctor Who remains uncertain

Since the end of the partnership with Disney+, future plans for the series have been up in the air. Disney had helped finance the episodes from the Ncuti Gatwa era, and now AMC is expected to step in to help. Along with this is the season finale that aired in June of last year, in which, following Gatwa’s departure, the regeneration brought Billie Piper back to the series—though it has left many questions about whether she will truly be considered the Sixteenth Doctor, or if it will be just more Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff within the show’s always-quirky plot. We’ll have to wait for the special arriving at Christmas 2026 for all doubts to finally be cleared up.
