‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ reveals its gameplay through a 20-minute deep dive
We finally have our first look at official gameplay for ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’, and while still in development it already looks incredible, but much different than expected.
After a surprise appearance during the Xbox Games Showcase of Summer 2024, Bioware has released a clear look at what players can expect when ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ releases later this year. And it’s done so in the way of a 20-minute long gameplay reveal trailer that takes viewers through what seems to be the opening moments of the game.
Of course, instead of this being a typical Bioware RPG where you start in a peaceful state before things get crazy, it seems like the devs are dropping fans straight into the action, with Solas, one of the franchise’s most beloved/hated characters, already completing a ritual he warned us about at the end of the previous title. You can take a look below.
Surprisingly, the first thing you can tell from this showing is the fact that Bioware seems to have leaned heavily into real-time action, as throughout the video we only see the player character jumping into hack-and-slash combat with no commands issued to his party members. In fact, while other characters are shown as joining your crew, they don’t even get health bars, and the ability to command them to use skills and other actions is only mentioned briefly as something to be “unlocked later”.
Whether or not the strategic nature of the Dragon Age series is completely gone is yet to be revealed, but nothing has been shown yet that confirms it. Still, this is only a small glimpse at the new kind of gameplay (which curiously feels like what Mass Effect did with companions). The studio has revealed that they plan to show off more details about the character creator, the game’s main hub, a deeper dive into the gameplay systems, and more, but for now fans can only hold on to the epicness of the series still being present in this first look.
