The publishers of ‘Dragon Ball Super’ have sent an emotional message to the family and fans of Akira Toriyama due to the author’s recent passing.

‘Dragon Ball Super’ closes chapter 103 (now available to read for free) with an emotional message to all the fans and the author’s family. The sudden death of Akira Toriyama has not been overlooked in the closing of the current story arc of the series.’A Legacy Toward The Future’, as it has been called, with the team sending this heartfelt tribute to the figure of the creative.

“Akira Toriyama-sensei, the author of many Jump magazine works, has died. V-Jump’s editorial department is deeply affected by the sudden sad news. We thank you for having made us enjoy your wonderful works, just as we wish you eternal happiness in heaven”, they write.

The translation team also shared their own message on the English version of the manga: “We’re all deeply saddened by the news of Toriyama Sensei’s passing. His work is an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all the fans who were touched by his work.”

When will ‘Dragon Ball Super’ return?

Chapter 103 of ‘Dragon Ball Super’ will be the last release of the series for a while. Before Toriyama’s death, the publisher had already confirmed the break after completing the narrative arc that concludes in the mega-fight between Goku and his son, Gohan. Toyotaro’s break will last only a month, at least according to what Shueisha themselves shared. After finishing reading the chapter we can see that the next one (#104) will be published on May 20, 2024. It is clear that the artist is still going strong despite the sudden loss of his teacher.

Toriyama’s passing shook the foundations of the ‘Dragon Ball’ community. Millions of messages were posted on social media reacting to the sad news. Even Emmanuel Macron himself, president of the French Republic, did not hesitate to share his state of mind upon learning of the death. Important faces of the manga industry, such as Eiichiro Oda (‘One Piece’) and Masashi Kishimoto (‘Naruto’) expressed their sadness shortly after the news came to light.
